Welcome to Pacific Wonderland
Introducing the Portland Rose Festival's fourth annual Rose Festival poster (1910).
This sublime image was seen until recently only in the few surviving tiny, poster postcards printed by the Portland Postcard Co (artist unknown). This artwork, effervescent, whimsical, and thrilling, it captured the Zeitgeist of 1910 Portland, Oregon.
The 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition that paved the way for the inagural 1907 Rose Festival. While not officially considered a World's Fair by the Bureau of International Expositions, it is often informally described as such; the Exposition attracted both exhibits and visitors from around the world. During the exposition's four month run, it attracted over 1.6 million visitors, and featured exhibits from 21 countries. Portland grew from 161,000 to 270,000 residents between 1905 and 1910! This dizzying growth spurt was largely attributed to the Exposition.
Mayor Harry Reid knew an opportunity when he saw one. In the Exposition's wake, he declared there should be a "Festival of Roses". Having stepped from the mud of “Stumptown” streets on to the world stage to a standing ovation, to Oregonians, the wonder of flight must have seemed a perfect theme for a city whose future must have seemed unlimited.
Though painstaking, meticulous work, Pacific Wonderland Press can now proudly offer this classic Portland image in a glorious high-quality 11x17" poster print for the first time in over a century.
